Who knew? Young adults do listen to their parents, and the BioEscalator is very glad about that. Becson Ody, our first Business Administration & Reception apprentice, found out about apprenticeships through his father, who is a ‘big advocate’.

Since he’s joined us, Becson has made a huge contribution to the team, and his enthusiasm for the role is clear to see. Here's what he had to say about his job when we talked to him recently.

What attracted you to the Business Administration and Reception role?

"I’ve always had a strong interest in business, beginning at school. This role was a great way for me to get started in the working world while building a background in something I’m passionate about. One of the things that really sold the apprenticeship to me was the 'earn while you learn' idea. It felt motivating to know that I’d be getting proper working experience while still learning and gaining qualifications at the same time."

"The apprenticeship felt like a solid stepping stone that could really help me move forward in the direction I want to go long term." - Becson Ody, BioEscalator Business Administration & Reception Apprentice.

How did your previous experiences influence your decision?

“I worked in a couple of businesses before joining BioEscalator, an events operations company, and a karate business, and I found the behind-the-scenes aspects really interesting. Those experiences made me want to explore the business world more and learn how things work from the inside.”

What’s the most enjoyable aspect of your job?

"It’s how everything blends together. I enjoy helping tenants, visitors, and engineers, setting up for things like Lunch & Learns and Pizza Socials, and just generally being involved in making things run smoothly. The tenants are great people to chat to and get to know, and it all adds up to a really welcoming and enjoyable place to work."

What’s surprised you most about the role?

"Probably how big the Medical Sciences Division at the University of Oxford actually is and how the BioEscalator contributes to its wider success. I didn’t expect to be surrounded by so many innovative and successful companies doing genuinely important work - it’s quite inspiring."

What’s your apprenticeship teaching you?

"I’ve picked up loads of skills already that I know will stick with me long term — like communication, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, adaptability, and professionalism. I’ve also learned a lot about IT systems and handling financial requisitions."

"I’d like to work towards gaining some more qualifications during my two years here, and then hopefully go on to a degree-level apprenticeship — something like Business Management. I want to keep building on what I’ve learned and continue progressing in my career." Becson Ody, BioEscalator Business Administration & Reception Apprentice.

We think you’ll have a long and successful career, Becson!
